PALATKA
Palatka is the county seat, and is home to about 10,000 people. The town got its name from the Indian term "crossing over;" it was the place they brought their cattle to traverse the river.
Like many of the towns in the area, Palatka has annual fairs and festivals which are well-attended--drawing not only local residents, but tourists from all over. Palatka has wonderfully restored historic neighborhoods which recall its long history as a favored residential and tourist destination in the days of paddlewheel steamships on the river.
