PUTNAM COUNTY
Putnam County is in the north-east portion of the state of Florida, with most of the county conveniently located to cities such as St. Augustine, Jacksonville, Daytona Beach, Gainesville and Ocala.
PUTNAM County was the 28th county in Florida, established in 1849. The county was named for Benjamin Alexander Putnam (1801-1869), Lawyer, soldier, member of the Florida legislature, judge, and the first president of the Florida Historical Society. Putnam County covers an area of 733 square miles, and has a population of just over 70,000 people. Part of the Ocala National Forest occupies Putnam County, but the county is most famous as the "Bass Fishing Capitol of the World." The mighty, north-flowing (!) St. Johns River slices through the county, and is the watery road that led many people to initially settle here.
